Actual
Mileage and Mileage Estimates
Regardless
of what you read, what is on the sticker when you purchase
the vehicle, what the EPA estimates, what the electronic
display on your console is showing, or what the oil companies
tell you; the only accurate figure for fuel economy and
mileage is what you manually calculate every time you
fill your tank. Even those figures are suspect based upon
the level to which you are filling your tank and the accuracy
of your odometer, but that's the best we can do without
adding scientific measuring devices to the vehicle.
Typically,
the mileage you actually calculate is somewhat lower than
those EPA estimates stuck to the window when you first
got the vehicle. Some of the factors that will effect
your realized mileage are:
·
Where you drive (Highway vs. Urban)
· How your drive (Constant Speed - Stop & Go)
· Driver Behavior & Driving Conditions
· Vehicle Condition & Maintenance
· Variations in Fuels
· Variations in Vehicles
· Engine Break-In
The figure below shows what the information
on the EPA label means.
Starting with the 2008 model year, the EPA Mileage
Rating label on new vehicles is going to change. The figure below
shows what the new EPA label means. The new EPA
document on Fuel Economy is also available.
