is Home Heating Oil?
In most cases, Home Heating Oil is simply
a low grade of Diesel Fuel - Diesel Fuel #3. Diesel Fuel #1 and
#2 is the fuel that is used in trucks, heavy equipment, marine
vessels, locomotives, and electrical generators. Diesel #1 and
#2 are generally lighter and cleaner burning than Diesel #3. What
is implied here is accurate - Home Heating Oil, Diesel #3, is
heavier and dirtier than the fuel used in most other diesel engines
resulting in lower efficiency and increased maintenance.
Because the fuel for your furnace is not burned in an engine
with a lot of moving parts, the more simple mechanics of the furnace
allow for a lower grade of fuel to be used. However all of the
issues associated with diesel fuel will exist to a somewhat greater
degree because of the fuel quality. Things such as accumulation
of moisture in the storage tank and the growth of bacteria (diesel
slime) are more likely resulting in a much less efficient burn.
The system will be more prone to the formation of sludge which
can foul to fuel, corrode the tank, and clog the jets and filters
on the furnace. And most of all, the furnace is also prone to
producing foul smelling exhaust odor, soot that gets blown into
the house and deposited on the walls, and harmful emissions such
as the extremely dangerous Carbon Monoxide.
